For my first project whilst studying at The University of Brighton, I was interested in exploring the different identities that make up an environment, particularly what they hold key to their identity. We are all human, but we each have unique identities that set us apart from others, together this creates the identity of an environment. I wanted to create a visual representation of an environment and the identities of those who reside within it. After taking the portraits of my subjects, I asked them all the same question 'What do you feel your identity is? What do you feel is key to your identity?'. From here, they wrote whatever they wanted on a piece of paper that I then scanned and placed alongside the corresponding portrait during the editing process.
